Professional interests and goals:  I am interested in the molecular mechanisms of plant disease and pest resistance as well as the biosynthesis of specialized compounds in plants.  Currently I am involved in the characterization of the accumulation of the C-glycosylflavone maysin in early maize vegetative stages combining biochemistry and genetic approaches. In this way, I am taking advantage of maize mutant lines and one panel of germplasm in order to elucidate new candidate genes involved in the biosynthesis pathway for maysin in vegetative tissues. In maize, flavones such as maysin, confer resistance to the corn earworm (CEW) and other insects. For this reason, we are working in the evaluation of the maysin effects on the growth rate not only in CEW but also in the fall armyworm larvae.
