About the Post-Baccalaureate Program

The goal of the Success in Graduate Education (SiGuE) program is to broaden the representation and competitiveness of historically underrepresented groups in the basic Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) fields. SiGuE provides an opportunity to enhance the research experience of post-baccalaureate students needed to make them competitive for M.Sc., Ph.D. or professional careers programs nationwide.

SiGuE will help reinforce academic training by providing an individualized student a development plan in a productive research experience mentored by faculties with strong academic programs. SiGuE strengthens the professional skills that are needed to excel in competitive science careers.

The program seeks to identify outstanding students interested in pursuing graduate education. Applicants interested in Genomics, Genetics, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology applied to areas of Bioenergy, Sustainability and Plants for Health are encouraged to apply. The program provides 6 - 12 months internship to enhance research laboratory and professional skills.

Applicants will work at the laboratories of Dr. Doseff (Dept of Physiology and Pharmacology and Dept of Toxicology) or Dr. Grotewold (Dept of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology) at Michigan State University.



Laboratory Research Experience

  • Develop technical skills in the areas of molecular biology, genomics, biochemistry and cellular biology.
  • Perform cutting-edge research.
  • Journal clubs.
  • Weekly lab meetings.

Research areas: Gene Regulation, Plant Genomics, Bioenergy, Bioinformatics, Plants for Health.

Professional Development

  • Data presentation skills, training in current software.
  • Enhance communication skills, training in poster and oral presentations.
  • Develop professional networking.
  • GRE exam financial assistance.
  • Applying for graduate school.
  • Participate in Academic and Advancement Services provided by the Office of  Diversity Inclusion.

Open to permanent residents of the United States with an interest in pursuing graduate education in Biosciences. A Bachelor of Science degree in either Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, or Bioengineering is required. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and meet an underrepresented group requirement
