Incoming graduate students are invited to participate a Fall Welcome Scavenger Hunt sponsored by the MSU Graduate School and the Council of Graduate Students! Participants will explore Michigan State University's campus while searching for key landmarks and locations. COGS invites you to come on out to campus for a day of fun & celebration on Saturday, August 24th. First, head over to the MSU Union from 10 am- Noon for the Graduate Student Welcoming & Resource Fair. All new and returning Graduate Students are invited to attend the annual welcome program for graduate students of MSU. Resource Fair will include student organizations, campus groups and community businesses – all ready to provide you with valuable information!

Then make your way over to the COGS Fall Welcome Celebration from Noon to 3:00pm at Benefactors Plaza (behind Chittenden Hall) on MSU’s campus. Nearby parking is available in the Grand River Ramp (ramp 6). All graduate and professional students, friends and families are welcome to join us. The Handbook of your Program covers many set expectations that will guide you to success in your graduate education at Michigan State University. However, there are many important expectations that need to be made explicit and are often jointly set that require proactive and effective communication between you and your faculty advisors and mentors. This short workshop provides an opportunity to explore strategies for aligning expectations early in your trajectory in graduate school and will inform you about other activities and resources to help you in that task. All members of MSU share responsibility to assure that misconduct or fraud in research and creative activity is dealt with effectively and that MSU's high standards for scholarly integrity are preserved. This workshop will review types of misconduct (fabrication, falsification or plagiarism) that occur in proposing, performing, or reviewing research and scholarly activities, and best practices to avoid these. The session will also cover proper behavior in mentor-mentee relationships. Learn more and register here.

The Integrative Pharmacological Sciences Training Program (IPSTP) Annual Retreat will be held on September 26th from 9 AM - 4 PM. It will feature student speakers, a poster session, and a Keynote from Dr. Rick Neubig. Lunch and an afternoon reception is included. Everyone from the MSU community whose research includes or is relevant to pharmacology is welcome to attend and present a poster! This includes students (graduate and undergraduate), postdocs, research assistants/technicians, and faculty. Poster presenters are eligible for poster awards, given at the end of day reception. The MSU Department of Police and Public Safety has released an online Active Violence Incident Awareness Training program that is available for students, faculty, and staff. This training includes a presentation explaining how to respond during an active violence situation. Throughout the training, knowledge checkpoint questions will appear on screen to evaluate participants’ understanding of the content. In addition, a video is in development, which will be included in the training at a later time. Learn more here.

The Office of the Board of Trustees is seeking a half-time Graduate Assistant for academic year 2024-2025. This position will provide essential support to the Secretary and Chief of Staff to the Board of Trustees in policy review, analysis, and development, as well as support special projects and initiatives. We seek to recruit a highly motivated and skilled postdoctoral researcher with training in molecular biology, plant genetics, or cell biology. The project will leverage recent advances in microscopy, genetics, and physiology to understand molecular mechanisms of dehydration and desiccation tolerance in Arabidopsis. This project is part of a recently funded NSF Biology Integration Institute called Water and Life Interface Institute (WALII, pronounced “Wally”). WALII studies how life interacts with water, from the molecular to the organismal level, across plants, fungi, and animals. WALII is a virtual institute, with scientists located at nine research facilities across the United States. Working together, WALII team members aim to uncover the rules by which organisms interact with water.
