RECR Workshop: Ethics in Research and Creative Activity, and Effective Mentoring
All members of MSU share responsibility to assure that misconduct or fraud in research and creative activity is dealt with effectively and that MSU's high standards for scholarly integrity are preserved. This workshop will review types of misconduct (fabrication, falsification or plagiarism) that occur in proposing, performing, or reviewing research and scholarly activities, and best practices to avoid these. The session will also cover proper behavior in mentor-mentee relationships. Learn more and register here.
CES Write-In
Join us on the first Friday of each month for three hours of dedicated time to advance your scholarship. Past participants have written journal articles, grant proposals, book chapters, theses or dissertations, curricula, pieces for public audiences, and community engagement portfolios. Participants should plan to write for the full three hours. We start the write-in by sharing writing goals for the day and wrap up with accomplishments and next steps. Learn more and register here.
Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) Workshop Series 2024
In this workshop series, STEM undergraduate and graduate students will participate in a 5-part series that will include an overview of the GRFP and application process, first-hand advice from GRFP reviewers and recent awardees, and two interactive sessions to review and revise their application documents. The introductory workshop will provide an overview of the GRFP award and the benefits. In addition, the workshop will provide a hands-on personal statement writing opportunity for preparation for fellowship applications. Learn more and register here.
MSU Innovations Course
MSU Innovations is offering NatSci a fall 1-credit graduate course, Science & Technology Commercialization: Patents, Product Development and Start-Ups, that will meet five times, 3 hours each time this semester (Thursdays, 3-6 p.m.), that will focus on entrepreneurship, developed explicitly for STEM graduate students. Whether or not a student may plan to start a business, this will be a useful course as students consider career options and if students have interest in becoming even more tech-transfer savvy.
The course is cross-listed under three of our departments- STT990, GLG897, and CEM987-003. Students may sign up for whichever section they prefer. The course is limited to 30 participants. Contact Dr. Angela K. Wilson (akwilson@msu.edu) for more information.
Integrative Pharmacological Sciences Training Program (IPSTP) Retreat
The Integrative Pharmacological Sciences Training Program (IPSTP) Annual Retreat will be held on September 26th from 9 AM - 4 PM. It will feature student speakers, a poster session, and a Keynote from Dr. Rick Neubig. Lunch and an afternoon reception is included. Everyone from the MSU community whose research includes or is relevant to pharmacology is welcome to attend and present a poster! This includes students (graduate and undergraduate), postdocs, research assistants/technicians, and faculty. Poster presenters are eligible for poster awards, given at the end of day reception. Learn more and submit an abstract here.

Job Postings
Research Associate, Fixed Term — Rhee Lab
We seek to recruit a highly motivated and skilled postdoctoral researcher with training in molecular biology, plant genetics, or cell biology. The project will leverage recent advances in microscopy, genetics, and physiology to understand molecular mechanisms of dehydration and desiccation tolerance in Arabidopsis. This project is part of a recently funded NSF Biology Integration Institute called Water and Life Interface Institute (WALII, pronounced “Wally”). WALII studies how life interacts with water, from the molecular to the organismal level, across plants, fungi, and animals. WALII is a virtual institute, with scientists located at nine research facilities across the United States. Working together, WALII team members aim to uncover the rules by which organisms interact with water. The candidate selected for this position will be working primarily on Theme 2.
