The goal of the Success in Graduate Education (SiGuE) program is to broaden the representation and competitiveness of historically underrepresented groups in the basic Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields. SiGuE provides an opportunity to enhance the research experience of post-baccalaureate students needed to make them competitive for M.Sc., Ph.D. or professional career programs nationwide.
SiGuE will help reinforce academic training by providing participants an individualized development plan and a productive research experience mentored by faculties with strong academic programs. SiGuE strengthens the professional skills that are needed to excel in competitive science careers.
The program seeks to identify outstanding participants interested in pursuing graduate education. Applicants interested in Genomics, Genetics, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology applied to areas of Bioenergy, Sustainability and Plants for Health are encouraged to apply. The program provides 6 - 12 months internship to enhance research laboratory and professional skills.
Applicants will work in the laboratories of Dr. Doseff (Dept. Physiology and Dept. Pharmacology and Toxicology) or Dr. Grotewold (Dept. Biochemistry and Molecular Biology) at Michigan State University.

Eligibility
Open to citizens and permanent residents of the United States with an interest in pursuing graduate education in Biosciences. A Bachelor of Science degree in either Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics or Bioengineering is required. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and meet an underrepresented group requirement.

What is an underrepresented group?
As defined by the National Sciences Foundation: Women, Alaska Natives, Native Americans, Blacks or African Americans, Hispanics, Native Pacific Islanders, and Persons with Disabilities are considered underrepresented in science and engineering because they constitute a smaller percentage of science and engineering degree recipients and of employed scientists and engineers than they do of the population.
Do I need a BS to apply?
No, applicants will however need to have a BS at the time of starting the program.
Do I get a salary or do I need to pay tuition to be a SiGuE Fellow?
You will receive a monthly stipend for your participation in the program. The program does not require taking classes, hence the program does not anticipate providing tuition costs.
Does the SiGuE program pay for my trip?
The program will provide assistance once for each participant to help cover trip costs.
Do I need to pay for the Professional Development activities listed at the SiGuE website?
No, these are included in this research/education experience.
